A number of interactive maps have been produced for the Upper Hunter region showing identified strategic agricultural land as well as areas of coal, coal seam gas and other mineral resources.

These are available at the links below and enable the viewer to turn layers of information on and off to show, for example, areas where strategic agricultural land overlaps with coal, gas or mineral resources. Simply click on the check-boxes in the left-hand panel of each map to turn layers on and off.

PLEASE NOTE: These maps, and the data that underpins them, have been produced at a regional scale and are, as a result, indicative only. They are NOT intended to be used at an individual property level and should not be used as such. Detailed, on the ground studies will be required to verify the nature of the mapped land at a property level as part of any future gateway application.

Guests to the launch of the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan have raised a number of ideas on how to improve transport in NSW.

The ideas will help form the discussion paper and draft NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan.

They have been summarised in a launch feedback report.

The NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan was launched at an event attended by the NSW Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay.

Transport for NSW was represented by the Director General Les Wielinga, the six Deputy Directors General and other senior staff. Representatives from each of the Ministers’ Offices were also present.

The launch included a workshop session where guests sat around tables, with two senior representatives from Transport for NSW or staff from Ministers’ offices at each.

They were provided with focus questions to help prompt discussion about the future of transport in NSW over the next 20 years and how the Government should build on its current commitments. Guests were asked to also write their ideas down and to submit them before leaving.

Every comment and idea captured has been forwarded to the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan Project Team for consideration in the development of the Plan.

The vision of the NSW Government is for a truly integrated transport authority which drives better transport outcomes for the NSW community.

Transport for NSW has been established with this vision firmly at the core.

Decision making for planning and policy is centralised in Transport for NSW. The organisation is responsible for improving the customer experience, planning, program administration, policy, regulation, procuring transport services, infrastructure and freight.

The operating agencies such as RailCorp, Roads and Maritime Services, State Transit and Sydney Ferries now focus solely on service delivery – providing safe, reliable, clean and efficient transport services.

The focus for Transport for NSW is clearly set out: the customer, be they a public transport user, a motorist, pedestrian, farmer or importer. The customer is at the centre of everything Transport for NSW does.

That is why two of the six divisions in Transport for NSW have been dedicated to the customer - the Customer Experience Division and the Freight and Regional Development Division.

The divisions in the new organisation are:

Customer Experience: responsible for ensuring the needs, preferences and opinions of customers are paramount in decision-making, planning and actions. Development of consistent standards and the use of information obtained from customers will drive improvements in services and planning.

Freight and Regional Development: responsible for integrating freight strategies and programs to meet the current and future needs of the NSW economy and particularly regional economies.

Planning and Programs: providing consolidated planning and overall investment advice for all modes.

Transport Projects: accountable for delivering transport infrastructure projects that meet time, cost and quality objectives.

Policy and Regulation: driving the development and implementation of customer focused legislative, regulatory and policy solutions.

Transport Services: ensuring services across the whole transport portfolio meet the current and future needs of customers.

The NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan is a major initiative of Transport for NSW. This fresh approach to transport planning will involve extensive consultation and collaboration with all of NSW in an effort to develop a Long Term Transport Master Plan that will deliver lasting results for NSW.

Les Wielinga
Director General, Transport for NSW
Les will lead the Transport for NSW team, including the six Deputy Directors General and their Divisions, through the development of the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan. Les is one of NSW's most experienced transport administrators with more than 35 years of experience managing transport issues, strategic planning, infrastructure development, program and project management and administration. He has served as Director General since July 2009. Prior to this Les was the Chief Executive of the Roads and Traffic Authority. Les' management skills were developed in the early years as a Civil Engineer and Project Manager in the NSW Department of Main Roads. He has substantial experience in leading large multidisciplinary teams in areas such as engineering and project management.

Deputy Directors General

Tony Braxton-Smith
Deputy Director General, Customer Experience
Tony leads the team responsible for improving the customer’s overall experience of transport in NSW. His team works to ensure customers’ needs, preferences and opinions drive improvements, strategy and standards in transport planning, policy, investment and services. His focus will be identifying opportunities for innovation, better information and improved products across operator services, customer information, timetabling and ticketing, access and interchanges, feedback handling and facilities.

Carolyn McNally
Deputy Director General, Planning & Programs
Carolyn oversees planning across all transport modes. Her team is responsible for identifying transport needs, producing integrated transport plans including the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan, developing infrastructure and service solutions and managing Transport for NSW’s overall investment budget.

Tim Reardon
Deputy Director General, Policy & Regulation
Under Tim’s leadership the Policy and Regulation Division drives strategic policy across the transport portfolio. His focus is responding to key safety challenges in roads, maritime and public transport, and ensuring the Government’s regulatory framework supports transport objectives and national reforms that benefit NSW. The Division is the key point of contact for Transport for NSW’s industry stakeholders on policy matters and reform processes.

Chris Lock
Deputy Director General, Transport Projects
Chris’ team is responsible for delivering major infrastructure and fleet asset projects. Transport Projects consolidates the former Transport Construction Authority and the Transport Infrastructure Division to provide a single point of accountability for major projects, including strategic procurement for rolling stock and fleet. This new approach will expand Transport for NSW’s capability for integrated project development and delivery and allows operating agencies to focus on transport service delivery and asset maintenance. The team will focus on delivery planning and creating a ‘centre of excellence’ for expert services that support projects.

He will focus on delivering a seamless transport system by developing and managing performance contracts with these agencies.

The Freight & Regional Development Division will be the central point of co-ordination for freight transport, distribution and servicing. It consolidates key freight systems and their components including road, rail, marine, ports and intermodal terminals.

The other critical agency involved in the development of the Long Term Transport Master Plan will be NSW Roads and Maritime Services.

Why we must plan

The population of NSW is growing. In the future we will require more housing, more jobs and new infrastructure and services to meet demand. A key consideration for government is how to plan for the future transport needs of a growing population.

The way we engage with transport can affect our daily lives in many different ways.

It can be about getting to work on time, or being able to access essential services in regional areas. At the other end of the spectrum, it can involve decisions about the movement of millions of tons of freight that can impact the price of goods we all buy.

NSW needs an efficient and coordinated transport system that is world class.

The new integrated transport authority, Transport for NSW, oversees a vast range of activities that affect all people from across the state, including:

Servicing around 295 million passenger journeys by rail each year on the 3,236 kilometres of rail track in the CityRail network alone.

Licensing 4.7 million drivers and riders using the 5.3 million registered vehicles on a state wide road network of 184,761 kilometres.

Operating State Transit buses for over 207 million passenger trips annually and providing approximately 15,000 bus services each working day.

Contracting private and State Transit buses in the metropolitan and outer metropolitan areas of Sydney with a fleet of over 4,000 buses, including 2,198 wheelchair accessible buses.

Providing CountryLink rail services to over 365 destinations throughout the state with a fleet of over 100 carriages. CountryLink also provides coach services in regional areas to enhance rail services.

Providing ferry services on Sydney Harbour.

Enabling alternative transport and active lifestyles through a system of 2,795 kilometres of on-road cycleways and 1,510 kilometres of off-road cycleways throughout NSW.

Supporting pedestrians throughout the state, including around 90,000 workers within Sydney, or five percent of the workforce, who walk to work.

Supporting the movement of over 25 million mass tonnes of freight through Port Botany each year.

Supporting the road based freight task, including more than 5.5 billion kilometres travelled by heavy vehicles in NSW each year.

NSW needs to plan effectively to meet the transport needs of future generations.

As the largest state economy in Australia, NSW has an added responsibility to produce better transport outcomes for the national economy. An efficient transport system will help generate greater economic output, benefiting residents of NSW and the wider population.

Everybody has a stake in the future transport needs of NSW. That is why the NSW Government has initiated a fresh approach, with close consultation across the community, to develop a Long Term Transport Master Plan.
